Tennis betting: two outcomes, plenty of detail
Tennis is a good sport for learning betting arithmetic: the main market has only two outcomes, so the margin takes seconds to work out. It also has a few rules of its own, especially on retirements, that change how bets settle. Tournaments and markets at Powerbet are in the sports section.
See tennis at PowerbetThe main markets
- Match winner: two players, two prices.
- Game or set handicap: one player starts a few games ahead.
- Total games: under or over a line such as 21.5.
- Correct score in sets: for example 2–0 or 2–1.
- Live markets: set winner, game winner, sometimes the next point.
The margin on a two-way market
Illustrative example, not Powerbet odds: 1.25 and 3.90. Implied probabilities: 80.0% + 25.6% = 105.6%, a margin of about 5.6%. On an even match, 1.90 / 1.90 gives 52.6% + 52.6% = 105.3%. Compare margins across matches and markets: with the same information, the cheaper market is the better buy.
Retirements: the rule that matters most
If a player retires, bookmakers apply different rules: some void match-winner bets unless a set was completed, some settle them if the match started, others once at least one set was played. The rule at Powerbet is in its sports rules. Read it before backing a player with known fitness problems.
Live tennis betting
Tennis suits live betting because point-by-point play moves the odds fast. The speed is also the risk: it is easy to place many small bets, each with its own margin. Illustrative example: 40 live bets of 5 lei at an average 6% margin cost 12 lei on average — more than a single 150 lei pre-match bet at a 5% margin (7.50 lei).
Free bets on tennis
Free bets on a two-way market are easy to value: potential profit × true probability. A 30 lei free bet at 2.10 returns 33 lei profit if it wins; at a true probability of 45%, its average value is about 14.90 lei. More on sports bonuses on sports betting and on bet types on bet types.
