Football betting: the main markets, with the maths in view

Football has the most markets of any sport and usually the lowest margins on big matches. The sheer number of markets also makes it easy to bet on something whose price you never checked. Leagues and markets at Powerbet are in the sports section; here is how to weigh the odds.

The core markets

Regular time

Nearly all football markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time, excluding extra time and penalties. A "to qualify" or "to lift the trophy" market in a knockout tie has different rules; read the market rules.

Working out the margin on a goals market

Illustrative example, not Powerbet odds: under 2.5 at 1.87 and over 2.5 at 1.93. Implied probabilities: 53.5% + 51.8% = 105.3%, so about a 5.3% margin. If the same market were 1.97 / 1.97, the margin would drop to about 1.5%. Small differences in odds mean big differences in long-run cost.

Football accumulators

A five-match slip seems to turn a small stake into a big win, but margins multiply. Illustrative example: five selections, each carrying a 5% margin, add up to a combined margin of roughly 21–22%. That is why accumulators are the bookmaker's favourite product. If you play them, do so knowing the price.

Big-match offers

Derbies and tournaments bring odds boosts, free bets and first-bet insurance. Check the maximum stake at the boosted price, whether the free bet returns the stake, and the minimum odds for any wagering. The core arithmetic is on the sports betting page. Note that football-themed casino games such as Lucky Goal have nothing to do with real matches.

Knowledge helps, the margin stays

Studying form, injuries and schedules can improve your estimates, but only if they beat the market's. For most bettors the long-run outcome is the margin paid. Keep a monthly betting budget as for any entertainment.

Football betting FAQ

Does football betting include extra time?
Usually not: standard markets settle on regular time. The exact rules are in the market rules at Powerbet.
What does "double chance" mean?
You back two of the three possible outcomes and win if either happens, at lower odds than a 1X2 bet.
Why do accumulators pay so much?
Because they multiply the odds — and the margins. The more selections, the higher the combined margin.
