Basketball betting: the sport of handicap lines
In basketball, high scores often make the match-winner market lopsided. That is why the main markets are the point handicap (spread) and the points total, both built to be close to 50/50. Leagues and markets at Powerbet are in the sports section; here we explain the mechanics and the price.
See basketball at PowerbetThe main markets
- Match winner, usually including overtime.
- Point handicap: the favourite starts with a minus, for example −5.5.
- Total points: over/under a line such as 171.5.
- Quarters and halves: the same markets on part of the game.
- Player points, where offered.
Overtime
Unlike football, many basketball markets include overtime because the game cannot end level. Totals usually count overtime points too — a detail that can turn a nearly won "under" into a loss. Check each market's rule in the Powerbet rules.
How a handicap settles
Illustrative example: you back team A at −5.5. If A wins by 6 or more, you win; by 5 or fewer, or if A loses, you lose. Half-point lines remove the tie. Whole-number lines (for example −5) may refund the stake if the margin is exactly 5.
The margin on a spread
Spreads are priced near 1.90 on both sides. Illustrative example: 1.88 / 1.94 gives 53.2% + 51.5% = 104.7%, about a 4.7% margin. To beat that margin you need to be right more often than the implied probability of your side — over 53% of bets at 1.88 — a harder bar than it sounds.
Live basketball
Basketball has constant scoring swings, so live odds move all the time. Breaks between quarters are the moments to read prices without the pressure of a possession in progress. The same rule as in tennis applies: many small bets add up to a lot of margin.
Basketball bonuses
Odds boosts on basketball often carry a low maximum stake. Free bets are valued as elsewhere in this section: potential profit times true probability. The basics are on sports betting, the bet types on bet types.
